Concerns with old glasses and buying new ones

Postby lilblu » Thu Feb 09, 2012 4:52 am

I need to buy a new pair of eyeglasses for the first time in eight years. I'm not sure what I should get and since I'm paying without insurance, I want to make sure I get something I'm happy with. I would be getting single vision glasses for long distance vision (I'm nearsighted).

The following are things I have/had issues with:

Glare
My current glasses (recently broken in a car accident) had a glare that was annoying. I'm fairly certain they didn't have an AR coating. I'm interested in getting AR glasses, but have a few concerns:
1) I have a skin condition that causes tiny flakes of skin to fall onto the lenses. This usually means that the lenses need to be washed with a mild soap and water every 7-14 days. Will any of this cause a problem with AR coated lenses, especially if they are cheap?
2) Can the glare in non AR glasses cause any damage to my eyes?
3) Is there a type of lens material that would be better suited for my skin flaking problem and for preventing glares if I choose not to get the AR lenses?

I suspect I won't be able to afford AR lenses right now.

Degradation of the lenses
It seems to me that even though I was very careful with the lenses, that they became degraded over the last six months or so in the same spot. I feel as though this caused vision problems.
1) Is this a common problem with lenses? If so, what is the best type of lens?

Weird circles during night time driving
Over the past few months I've noticed these weird circles when wearing my glasses while riding in a car. I saw a total of two circles - one through each lens. When I removed my glasses, there were no circles. This only started within the past three months or so. I can't describe the circles other than they seemed to be reflections of some sort coming off the headlights of oncoming cars. So they were small, headlight colored circles.
1) What caused these circles to appear?

Pain on the nose
When I began wearing my glasses all the time I noticed that every so often I would get pains on my nose right under the nose pads of the glasses. It was mostly on the right side. I think the nose pads were sitting directly on top a vein.
1) Is this a common problem and can it be corrected?
