Xifaxan (rifaximin) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome any good?

Postby MD1 » Thu Jan 06, 2011 12:13 am

There's been a lot of buzz today about a new study for Irritable Bowel Syndrome about a drug called rifaximin, which is sold under the brand name Xifaxan. I need to do a bit more reading to see if the results are sound, but I'm a skeptic by nature. It sounds like 41% of the study subjects improved on the medication whereas 30% in the placebo group had improvement. With a large placebo response, I think it may be difficult to tell if the active drug really did make such a big impact. Of course, with the disease as prevalent as it is, this will likely lead to many people being put on this medication.

Once I have a chance to look through the actual study, I'll try to post my thoughts and some more specifics.

For now, you can find more information about rifaximin / xifaxan in the news here.
